Hai Chen: “This is my Passion”!

WOW atelier has created the interior design and visual identity for the new Chinese fast-casual restaurant RICED. The client brought a rich history to the project; the native-born owner and chef, Hia Chen, wanted his family legacy to be passed on through his unique recipes and the rice dishes he crafted and perfected over the past 25 years.  Hia stressed that he wanted to see this happen in an environment that reflected the highest quality authentic Chinese gourmet food in a clean, modern, sophisticated dining environment focused on efficiency.

“This is my passion! I believe rice should be the centerpiece of your meal. I offer five handcrafted authentic fried Rice dishes you can get nowhere in the world, but here, I am certain you will fall in love with them as my friends and family have.” – Hai Chen

planning approach

fast fresh casual

In collaboration with our client, we studied the current landscape of the 200 billion dollar-a-year Quick Serve Restaurant industry and the ever-increasing opportunities in a newer market sub-segment called “fast casual.” This segment has seen 8% increases annually over the past few years and was a motivating factor in positioning RICED in this market.  It was clear that a combination of how Hai wanted to present his food, the location of the restaurant in an upcoming part of town with robust large-scale business coming in, and the desire for an environment that spoke to quality would be a perfect fit for the restaurant.  The design decision from the start focussed on efficient queuing and ordering, easy pickup locations, and many seating typologies to allow single people or large groups to sit comfortably.

tea as a culture

Tea is a critical part of Chinese culture; it was identified in Southwest China over four thousand years ago.  The Tang Dynasty (618-906) created “tea culture,” a pleasurable social activity that began to spread widely throughout China. From the beginning of the design process, we knew that tea needed to play a prominent role in how it was displayed and served. We focused on making the tea experience an integral part of the ordering process.  So, we designed and handcrafted a one-of-a-kind hot water dispenser made of copper with a large assortment of tea selections near by.
