fine art belongs on your wall, not just a museum

The Modern West brand wanted to create a gallery that accomplished two things: design a gallery space that exemplified the “West” and showcase artwork in a way that did not feel like a museum or art gallery. WOW atelier was commissioned to create the conceptual framework of how the space would accomplish this goal, as well as execute the design and implementation of every detail within the space.  The overarching concept was to create rooms within rooms to elicit a more residential experince. Each room had multiple functions; the living room, for example, was a gallery space that could turn into a private showroom, and the reception area was able to transform into a bar for openings and private events. The main gallery walls formed an implied room via their placement and thickness, allowing the “residential” scale to be felt throughout. In total, this allowed the overall experience to feel as if you were moving through someone’s home, from space to space, each with its unique use and style.

project approach

that floor

The “American West” is defined by its wide open spaces and the outsized dominance of the sky within the landscape. There are also endless blue streams, rivers, and lakes to dot the landscape at every turn. Perhaps this is why stones like turquoise are so prevalent in many native cultures throughout the Western United States.  We wanted this turquoise-like blue color to radiate through the space in a way that brought a calming spiritual nature to the gallery, creating a sense of calm to allow patrons to be in the right mindset to consider the depth of the artwork itself.

how to say “the west”

While it may seem counterintuitive to create a floor with a vibrant personality of its own, in this case, it was precisely what was needed.  The floor needed to allude to the expansive western skies, the blue lakes, rivers, and streams, and the turquoise jewelry associated with the “West”.  In fact, in many ways, the floor became a piece of jewelry itself, an accessory to the space.  Each piece of ash was hand-stained with nine different colors of blue, teal, turquoise, obsidian, and topaz and laid in a custom herringbone pattern.
