The client’s deep love affair with director Stanley Kubrick pushed an integration of the 1980 horror film “The Shining” into the entertainment space of their home. WOW atelier was commissioned to do the architecture interior design and produce and install all fabricated custom elements for the project.
The various film sets provided the color, tone, texture, hardware, pattern, and material inspiration required to evoke the film’s spiritual essence. Of the many pieces fabricated, the Geometric Bed illustrates the subtlety of inspiration without replication. Inspired by the dark wood tones permeating throughout the corridors and the gold room, the solid hardwood mahogany bed becomes the rich base tone to hand-inlaid brass. Inspired by the iconic carpet patternation depicted during the kickoff of Danny’s first unnerving encounter in the movie.
The hexagonal pattern from the film is articulated with brass inlay and disguises the wood’s nominal seams. The brass hardware resurfaces as both horizontal and vertical surfaces, similar to the hardware found in Room 237. As a matter of function, the headboard doubles as a bookshelf, and the low-profile bed extends beyond the mattress to create a bench and a pair of matching nightstands
