a cozy lodge for the creative souls of Sundance

CIVIC Entertainment Group and Airbnb invited WOW atelier to join the team to translate their experiential programmatic needs into physical space for the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. The project was Airbnb’s first time at the Sundance Film Festival. WOW took an existing restaurant on Main Street in Park City, Utah, disassembled and moved the establishment out, and then built the entire venue in under 30 days.

Airbnb’s design narrative was clear: “Quite simply, we want to provide people with access to the best stories as well as the most interesting people and experiences at Sundance Film Festival, all within a place reminiscent of a cozy, comfortable lodge.”

programmatic components

the kitchen

The Kitchen brought a double life to the space. By day, it was a cozy coffee bar, perfect for casual conversation and impromptu meetups. But by night, it transformed into a “Sketch and Booze” lounge, an energized setting for events like “Bingo and Booze” and lively cocktail receptions. This was a space built to adapt, capturing the spirit of Sundance—where creatives could relax, sketch, and let loose, blurring the line between function and festival in the best way possible.

the drawing room

The Drawing Room was the heartbeat of the Haus. By day, it offered big, warm lounge seating for casual hangouts. By night, the space came alive with comedy shows, talks on women in film led by Gina Davis, and events like karaoke and “trivia & toddies”. Here, the most creative minds in the industry unwound over cocktails, bringing together Sundance’s finest in a place built for relaxation and inspiration.. The Drawing Room wasn’t just a “room”; it became a haven for the pulse of the festival.

the hall

The Hall was where stories were shared over unforgettable meals. We set the stage for Utah’s emerging culinary talents to serve dinners, creating a space where producers, directors, actors, and writers could gather, share insights, and connect over great food and intimate conversations.

the studio

The studio was designed to be a break from the digital frenzy, a step back into the analog. We brought it to life by creating a space to host artist workshops and “painting parties”, creating a space for guests to unwind, connect, and rediscover the tactile joy of hands-on creativity.

touch points

social drumbeat activities

We created distinct experiential rooms, each crafted to define the environment in its own unique way. The Kitchen is warm and communal. The Drawing Room offers a quieter, reflective atmosphere. The Hall is a passageway of anticipation, while the Artist’s Studio is a nod to connectivity and creativity, with materials and layout that spark spontaneity. Each space does more than sit passively; it works, pulling people into the experience, creating an environment that is as much a guide as it is a backdrop.
