deep historic connections

Park City, Utah is a resort town with a rich history rooted in silver mining. The first claims were filed in 1868. Like many mining towns, Park City has seen big booms and busts. As mine yields dwindled, the town had to reimagine its future. To its good fortune, in 1963, tourism and recreational activities filled the void. The first ski resort to open was Treasure Mountain Resort, part of what is now Park City Mountain Resort.

With all of this in mind, WOW atelier is in tune to this rich historical context in each project it does in Park City. We always make sure to respect the past and meaningfully contribute to the future.

project approach

the Rio Grande legacy lives on!

The site was long home to the Rio Grande Railroad Company. Through the years, various sections of the depot were destroyed, leaving only one building from the original terminal. The structure was located in the middle of the site, surrounded by an asphalt parking lot. For the project, we temporarily moved the historic building off the site and prepared the site for construction. Working with the Park City Historical Society, WOW proposed moving the building to the site’s most prominent corner, a nod to the original building’s location.  Because the project is located on one of the main entrances to Historic Main Street, the presence of the renovated Rio Grande Building acts as the perfect historical reference with a contemporary twist, welcoming visitors from around the world.

a mix of uses

The project renovated the historic Rio Grande Depot Building and created a separate structure for ten modern condo units, four commercial spaces, upper deck amenity spaces, and an underground parking structure.

a quote from the owner!

“Architects tend to be engineers or artists; Chimso and WOW are both. High-end projects like mine need both. WOW will design whatever you ask them to. They are great at throwing out their own ideas but they are understanding and respectful of my opinions and decisions, which is why we have a great relationship. Their greatest strength is a devotion to the project and the client. Having someone that’s truly swinging for you and has your back is a rare commodity.”
